The report says that Royals boss Velko Paunovic has inspired discussions between the two clubs and that the move is close.

However, Everton have inserted a clause into the contract that allows them to be removed from the January move-in window if the move doesn’t go as well as expected.

Gibson will be in a fierce war for a place in Reading, with Liam Moore, Michael Morrison, Tom McIntyre and Tom Holmes also competing for first-team runs.

Gibson, a young England international, has not yet appeared in Everton’s first team after the ladder.

He played on loan at Fleetwood Town last season.
