Exclusive: Bent claims Chelsea star set to plummet down pecking order as transfer plot revealed

Darren Bent admits he fears Tammy Abraham could plummet down the pecking order as Chelsea set their sights on signing another striker.

The former Tottenham and England hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 22-year-old may already be Frank Lampard’s third choice up front next season after the capture of Timo Werner.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday, the Blues plotting a move to sign another marquee centre forward despite the signing of Germany international Werner from RB Leipzig.

Lampard has had Giroud, Abraham and Michy Batshuayi at his disposal during the 2019/campaign, although the latter is up for sale this year after failing to convince with his performances.

This site has also revealed that the England striker’s future is up in the air as he seeks a new and improved contract despite struggling to consistently perform at the highest level.

Bent believes that another new striker signing could relegate the 22-year-old to fourth-choice in the pecking order under Lampard.

Bent told Football Insider: “You talk about another marquee signing coming through the door but they’ve already got one in Timo Werner so I mean that doesn’t bode well for Tammy.

“He’s been playing behind Giroud, who has been absolutely superb towards the end of the season by the way, and you’re bringing in another superstar like Werner. That means potentially Tammy could be third spot already.

Abraham has played 46 times and scored 16 goals across all competitions this season.

However, only three of those strikes have come in 2020.

In other news, Chelsea have made a “big breakthrough” in their bid to sign Ben Chilwell.
