Tottenham are not finishing signing a striker before the end of the summer transfer window and have two Premier League hitmen on their wanted list.
Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League last season after promoting all-time top scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich and failed to recruit a direct replacement.
Although Ange Postecoglou adapted to use Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Timo Werner in attack, they did not have the firepower to succeed in the Champions League, which will once again be the target this season.
Sources have told TEAMtalk’s moves correspondent Rudy Galetti that Spurs are pursuing Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Bournemouth player Dominic Solanke.
Toney, 28, is said to be the right value this summer due to his preference for playing for a bigger club and the fact that he has one year left on his contract with the Bees. But he has returned to training with Thomas Frank’s team after missing last season’s peak due to a suspension earned for violating the laws of the game.
Brentford are already looking to sign a replacement, with several roles available, adding Benfica’s Arthur Cabral. Once progress is made, Toney’s future may become much clearer.
He enjoyed a successful summer with England, playing a key role off the bench and helping the Three Lions to success in the Euro 2024 final, which they lost 2-1 to Spain last month.
Solanke, 26, enjoyed his most prolific season with the Cherries in the top flight last year, scoring 19 goals as Andoni Iraola’s men inspired and finished 12th.
However, it is believed that Bournemouth would be reluctant to sell the England striker, once selected and so late in the window due to his position in the team. He has 3 years left on his contract at Vitality Stadium.
TEAMtalk understands that Tottenham could simply submit offers for Toney and Solanke in the coming weeks as their search for a new striker intensifies.
Postecoglou admits Spurs still have work to do before the window closes.
“I don’t think everything will be done [in this window]. I never believed in quick fixes and I think I said it would have been wonderful if we had already done our thing, but I kept a field so I wouldn’t leave and get too excited in those moments,” he says.
“It is a complicated moment. This is the component of the season where I probably have the least excessive decisions and I have learned to stay disciplined and make sure we do what we set out to do. We added the two young guys, but I also think there has been an expansion of other guys compared to last year, which naturally makes us more potent this year.
“But yeah, clearly we still have a helping hand in this window, but I think we’re moving beyond this window. “It wasn’t just superficial touch-ups when I took over, it needed, you know, a big replacement on the part of from where it is now.
Postecoglou will make massive adjustments to the Spurs squad and admits that this is already underway.
“I was thinking about last year’s preseason, you know, I think 50% of the other people who were on that outing probably aren’t here now. So we’ve already done a lot of things and we don’t want to do that many, but I still think so. . . Because it’s not just about having a successful year. What you’re looking to build is another, hopefully, another cycle of success, and I think it’s going to take a little bit longer.
Tottenham will visit newly promoted Leicester on Aug. 19 to kick off the Premier League season.
