Thomas Sorensen claims he has a challenge with Kobbie Mainoo’s play that is creating “challenges” for Manchester United.
Kobbie Mainoo has the next star to rise through the ranks of Manchester United after joining Erik ten Hag’s side this season.
The 18-year-old made his full Premier League debut at Goodison Park in November and hasn’t returned since.
After a few performances for United, Mainoo made his England debut earlier this month and earned praise following his performance against Belgium.
His impressive start to his United career has led the likes of Micah Richards to call the youngster a “true star”.
But after his very good goal against Liverpool on Sunday, Thomas Sorensen believes Mainoo still has a lot of work to do, especially on the defensive side of his game.
Speaking on the Optus Sport Football podcast, Sorensen claimed that Mainoo’s defensive work creates “problems” for United.
“Despite all the credits Mainoo receives, defensively he has a lot of work to do,” said the former Sunderland goalkeeper.
“I think his follow-up is the best, the same with Fernandes. This creates disorders for them. That’s why they give so many opportunities.
Although Sorensen claims that Mainoo still wants to work on the defensive side of his game, the youngster can’t be blamed for his efforts.
We agree with your comments that Mainoo and Fernandes will not be returning as both players are running hard for the team.
In fact, according to stats site FBref, Mainoo has averaged 15 defensive moves per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, the sixth-highest among all players in the division.
They had 34 tackles, 18 blocks and 18 interceptions in 17 league games.
Although his positioning may leave a lot to be desired, Mainoo fulfills the task required defensively.
