MONTMELO, Spain (AP) – Sergio Pérez will compete this week in the Spanish Grand Prix after negative for coronavirus.

The FIA’s governing framework allowed him on Thursday to return to the paddock for Montmeló’s race on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Racing Point’s driving force has missed the last two races at Silverstone in England after contracting the virus on a stopover in Mexico last month. He flew privately to make a stopover at the hospital with his mother.

“In fact, I missed the race and it was hard to see from the outside,” Perez said. “I’m very fortunate to have only had mild symptoms, so I was able to maintain education and make sure I’m in a position to get my wheel back.”

Nico Hulkenberg, the German veteran who Perez at Silverstone, retires.
