Fabio Carvalho: Brentford’s Liverpool deal ‘ticks all the boxes’ in £27. 5m transfer

News / Transfers / Fabio Carvalho: Brentford and Liverpool deal ‘ticks all the boxes’ in £27. 5m move

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has praised Fabio Carvalho’s “great skills” and will use the winger as a number 10 after signing the 21-year-old from Liverpool for an additional £27. 5m.

The Reds turned down a £15m offer from Southampton for Carvalho following his second goal on their United States tour earlier this month, and have now reached an agreement with the Bees for a player Frank plans to play in their front row.

“Offensively he has a wonderful ball,” Frank told the Brentford website. “He can get past players, dodge a pass, create chances and take advantage of opportunities.

“His most productive position is as No. 10 or coming from the left. He’s a type of player that we don’t have much in the team, so anything will go up for us.

“His ability and mentality to work hard under pressure is also very, very good. This means he ticks all the boxes from a cultural point of view and has the right character. We are very pleased to see him arrive and move the team forward. “

Carvalho joined Liverpool from Fulham in July 2022 for £5m plus extras and scored his first goal in a 9-0 home win over Bournemouth the following month.

He made 21 appearances and scored three goals in his first season, but played three times in the Premier League for a total of 11 minutes after mid-October.

In 2023/24 he followed a one-season loan to RB Leipzig. Carvalho returned to Liverpool in December, having played 15 times for the Bundesliga side.

He was then loaned to Championship club Hull City, for whom Carvalho scored nine goals and two assists in 20 games.

Carvalho scored the first goal in Liverpool’s 3–0 victory over Manchester United in South Carolina on 4 August, continuing his promising form after scoring in a 2–1 victory over Arsenal in Philadelphia three days earlier.

“It’s great to have a few minutes,” Carvalho said of Liverpool’s tour of the United States. “For young players like me, and some of the younger ones, it’s incredible and that’s what you have to be a part of. Everyone has a chance to impress and we’ll go from there.

Brentford’s first Premier League match will take place at home against Crystal Palace on Sunday (2pm). They will then visit Liverpool in their first away game on August 25 (4:30 p. m. ).
