FC Barcelona agrees to bid for the team’s first star, reports La Repubblica

FC Barcelona has accepted Juventus’ offer of an initial loan and a mandatory purchase option for Ronald Araujo, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica citing anonymous sources.

Earlier this week, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Araujo had agreed to join the ‘Old Lady’, whose sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli wanted the deal to be done as a soon as possible and as early as next week.

La Gazzetta explained that all this in the absence of Barça’s approval of the loan for the rest of the 2024/2025 season and then the legal responsibility of acquiring the Uruguayan this summer.

But now, according to La Repubblica, Giuntoli’s counterpart in Catalonia, Deco, and president Joan Laporta have given their “OK” and have given the green light to the transfer.

Meanwhile, Jijantes FC movement expert Gerard Romero said anonymous sources at the club had told him there was no deal finalized between the two European giants.

“There is communication with them and the clubs have asked questions about the Uruguayan, but nothing has been decided,” Romero tweeted.

Romero then cited a message from Italian journalist Giacomo Iacobellis, who said Juventus resources had confided in him that “it hasn’t happened yet” regarding the transfer.

Last weekend, following his season debut under Hansi Flick away at Barbastro in the Copa del Rey, Araujo revealed that he was in contract renewal talks with Barca.

“We are talking about it with the club and we hope it can be resolved. “I am focused on betting again and getting minutes and intelligent sensations,” Araujo first responded when asked about the subject.

Subsequently probed on remaining “100%” with his present employers, however, Araujo then replied: “We’re talking, we will see how the issue continues.”

Some didn’t like how open and evasive Araujo’s comments were, but it wouldn’t be unexpected if they were informed that he was at the window.

The 25-year-old’s contract expires on June 30, 2026 meaning that – as is the case with Frenkie de Jong – next summer’s window is the last that Barca has to cash in on him and even that would be at a cut rate as things stand.

Previously, Relevo had reported that Araujo and De Jong had been threatened through the club with renewing before the same date in 2025 or being put on the market.

In his absence due to injury until the maximum of 2024, Araujo has seen Pau Cubarsi and Íñigo Martínez form a central defensive pair that he has not been able to break when he returns to action.
