FC Barcelona could lose 273 million dollars in the Olmo registration debacle

FC Barcelona could lose up to $273 million (€263 million) thanks to the debacle surrounding Dani Olmo’s registration, or lack thereof, as SPORT explains.

Barça received some bad news on New Year’s Eve in Spain, with La Liga issuing a statement that would not allow the striker to be registered for the rest of the 2024/2025 season as things stand.

“La Liga informs that, as of today, December 31, FC Barcelona has not presented any alternative that, in compliance with La Liga’s economic control regulations, would allow it to register any player from next January 2,” the correspondence read.

Those who decide to remain optimistic that Barça can change things until January 3, but pessimism is the general mood among the culers and the ‘environment’ that surrounds the club.

Olmo is technically a free agent as things stand lately. And his agent Andy Barça told Fabrizio Romano that the decision made through the player is to “stay at Barcelona” while “they do not consider another option”, the enormous amount of money that Barça would lose if he ended up leaving. It can’t be ignored.

First there is the $50 million (€48 million) that Barca are obliged to pay for the remainder of their contract till 2030 – even if the Euro 2024 winner is no longer in his books.

Added to that are the $57 million (€55 million) he has left to pay his last club, RB Leipzig, and the non-existent transfer fees that the Catalans would also waive.

According to German transfer market expert site Transfermarkt, Olmo is currently rated at $62 million (€60 million).

In addition, Barça sold its VIP boxes for the Spotify Camp Nou, which has not yet reopened because the renovation works are going beyond what was planned, for ($104 million) and €100 million. an amount of 208 million dollars (200 million euros), which means that another 100 million euros (104 million dollars) were lost.

Throw all that in the trash and we are talking about a whopping 273 million dollars (263 million euros) that a club that suffers financially like Barça cannot afford, because it is a black hole in its accounts.
