FC Barcelona are now contemplating making sales in the January move window, according to SPORT, citing anonymous sources.
The Catalans have had mixed good and bad news so far at the turn of 2025.
Although Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor have not yet been allowed to play after La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) refused to grant them licenses beyond December 31, the sale of VIP boxes for $104 million (100 million euros) for the renewed Spotify Camp Despite everything, Nou has allowed the club to return to the 1:1 rule according to Financial Fair Play (FFP).
While it was previously expected that Barca would experience little movement in the January transfer market, the latter key development has changed first team squad planning according to SPORT.
The club has been prompted to meet with agents to sound out exits for “several players” in the coming weeks, and understandably, the fringe and ignored stars that don’t play much of a prominent role in head coach Hansi Flick’s plans are on the chopping block primarily.
Should some of them be offloaded, this could allow Barca to make a new signing that will strengthen the starting XI as we head into the business end of the season.
Although Barça are currently five clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after leading them in six, they are still in the title race while sitting in second place in the new Champions League league level and alive in the Spanish National Cup competitions.
Sporting director Deco and Hansi Flick were in favour of keeping things as they were at least until June, but this plan has disappeared in light of recent events.
In a press conference ahead of Saturday’s 4-0 Copa del Rey victory over Barbastro, Flick expressed his preference for Eric García to stay.
“I don’t think he can leave, he is a wonderful player, he is very intelligent, he can play in several positions. He is a player we like and we did not think about the option of him leaving,” Array told Flick.
SPORT says that he is one name on a shortlist of potential sales, though, alongside former La Masia prospect Ansu Fati and possibly Andreas Christensen.
As these players came through the youth system or came to the club thanks to loose transfers, getting rid of them would bring a natural benefit for Barça.
It now remains to be seen if interested parties come in for the trio and others that could soon experience a change of scenery.
