An FC Barcelona star knows that he has very little to follow at the club this summer according to MARCA, which cites anonymous sources.
It seemed that Sergi Roberto would continue beyond the 2023/2024 season after one of his supporters, his former teammate Xavi Hernández, reversed his decision to leave the position of head coach.
Xavi initially announced that he would leave office at the end of that term, but his opinion will be replaced by president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco.
It was thought that the legendary midfielder would see his contract expire on June 30, 2025, until he made the serious mistake of publicly discussing Barça’s monetary limitations and how they affected their ability to maintain speed with their bitter rival, Real Madrid. Training
This mistake led to the dismissal of Xavi and, overnight, Roberto, one of his greatest supporters.
“I would like the club to renew with Sergi Roberto, and they know it. It is important, he can play in other positions,” said Xavi in January.
“You have to explain very little to him. He knows what Barça means, what it represents. He is a player who has been criticised, but he continues to play at the highest level. I’m very satisfied with him,” Xavi added.
However, so far no renewal has been announced for Roberto. His contract expired at the end of last month and an extension has yet to be submitted through Laporta or Deco.
MARCA explains that Barça “want to continue counting on him”, although they do not know if they will keep him until August due to problems of monetary fair play.
The Madrid newspaper cites anonymous sources from the player’s entourage who say that there are “very, very, very few options” for Roberto to continue in the best moment of his life.
But so far, neither the player nor the club have announced that they are willing to “break a tie”, which will hurt the 32-year-old.
With Roberto’s departure, Xavi’s successor, Hansi Flick, loses an experienced member of the squad who is also capable of playing in the center of the park or at right back.
