Barça are world champions! The Blaugrana beat FC Porto Fidelidade 6-3 in the final of the 2023 Intercontinental Cup in extra time and claimed their sixth win in the competition. Edu Castro’s team took advantage of the victory against the reigning European champions and let a 3-goal lead slip away. from distance to see the game extended to an additional era in which they scored 3 times to assert their dominance.
The meeting started quickly, as expected between two of the most productive groups in the world. There were chances for Ignacio Alabart and Pau Bargalló for the Blaugranes, as well as for former Barça player Hélder Nunes for the Portuguese team. In the 10th minute, Barça still found the goal, Marc Grau unleashed a counterattack that Alabart finished off well. Four minutes later, an unstoppable shot by Sergi Panadero made it 2-0 and the same player hit the post almost without delay.
Three goals in 8 minutes were scored by Pau Bargalló after a direct free kick and a blue card for Di Benedetto. However, just before the break, Porto scored a goal to get back into the game, with Di Benedetto scoring the goal.
Porto came out after the break, decided to return to the final, but ran into a determined Sergi Fernandez in the Barça goal. The goalkeeper was still defeated when Rafa Costa made it 3-2. in the 32nd minute.
The game then entered an era in which both teams had chances, but it was Hélder Nunes who, despite everything, found the net for Porto with two minutes remaining, the former Blaugrana’s shot was deflected and beat Sergi Fernandez in the 48th minute. It’s 3. -3 and sends the last one to 10 minutes of overtime.
Edu Castro’s side started extra time in the most productive way imaginable, with Marc Grau regaining their 4-3 lead in the first minute. Almost immediately, a quick counterattack allowed Barca to take a two-goal lead and Barroso finished well. The icing on the cake came when Pau Bargalló made it 6-3 in the 55th minute to seal out the victory and win the VI Intercontinental Trophy for FC Barcelona.
