PARIS, 23 Aug (Reuters) – Paris police briefly clashed with open-air crowds at Paris St Germain football stadium as the top opposition of the Champions League against Bayern Munich began on Sunday, while others were evicted from some bars for failing to comply with social estrangement regulations.
Football enthusiasts piled up in bars and restaurants in the French capital on Sunday night to watch the match, which is played in Lisbon, amid considerations of the hedging measures taken in the face of the multiplication of coronavirus infections in France.
Government officials had suggested others wear a mask in public before the game and several bars were closed. Police have warned more than two hundred more people not to cover their faces, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter.
Earlier in the evening, other people fired projectiles at police cars outdoors at the Parc des Princes stadium in Paris and were dispersed with tear gas, video footage showed on social media.
Paris police said the incident was resolved without any arrest.
Inside the stadium, several thousand people gathered to see the latest on giant screens. Many were not dressed in masks, according to a Reuters witness. (Report through Sarah White, Elizabeth Pineau, Michaela Cabrera; Editing through Daniel Wallis)
