MILAN (AP) — Fiorentina leader Joe Barone is in “critical but stable” condition after being rushed to hospital Sunday following a suspected attack on the center, leading to the postponement of his team’s Serie A match against Atalanta.

Barone was flown by helicopter to hospital in Milan after falling ill at the team’s hotel near Bergamo just hours before kick-off.

“Fiorentina can verify that Joe Barone is hospitalized lately in the cardiac intensive care unit of Milan’s San Raffaele hospital, headed by Professor Alberto Zangrillo,” the club said in a statement.

“His condition remains critical but stable. Barone has been receiving the ultimate complex treatment in cardiac care and support. Another update will be released tomorrow.

Italian media reported that Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Italiano and several players immediately went to the hospital and were presented to Barone’s wife, Camilla, who rushed to the hospital from Florence.

Barone’s four children are expected to arrive Monday from the United States.

Barone, who turns 58 on Wednesday, was born in Italy but grew up in New York City.

The match was due to kick off at 17:00 GMT, but Fiorentina asked for it to be postponed and the Italian league showed it would be played at a later date that has yet to be decided.

Some Fiorentina players were reportedly treated when Barone fell ill.

The postponement comes less than two weeks after the sixth anniversary of the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori, who was discovered dead in his hotel room after suffering a cardiac arrest before an attack at Udinese.
