A Port Elgin man is facing charges of driving under the influence and firearms offences after a traffic stop in Southampton on the afternoon of December 15 resulted in the seizure of nine firearms.
Saugeen Shores police obtained a report shortly after 2 p. m. about a suspicious drunk driver in the area of North Rankin Street and Turner Street. Police responded to the scene and observed the vehicle driving through the parking lot of a local business, according to a news release. .
A traffic stop was made and the driver showed symptoms of impairment. Police arrested the driver for driving under the influence and a search incident was conducted to arrest him.
Police observed a large gun cabinet and an ammunition box along with several cans of alcohol inside the vehicle. A search was completed and several firearms were located, police said.
A driver’s check revealed that he was recently prohibited from possessing firearms. He was taken to the police station where he provided two breath samples that exceeded the legal limit three times, according to the statement.
As a result of the investigation, a 37-year-old Port Elgin man has been charged with impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams, nine counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, unauthorized possession of a firearm and careless transportation of a firearm.
The man was held in custody for a bail hearing, while nine firearms were seized and are to remain in police custody during the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
