A fitness company with gyms in Aberdeen and Inverness has entered the management with 1,700 jobs across the UK now at risk.
DW Sports, which operates dozens of stores, had offices on Beach Boulevard in Aberdeen and Inverness Retail Park.
The company’s online page stopped working and a spokesman said he would work with directors to save as many gyms as possible, but that they would close all of their outlets.
The company, which was founded through former Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan, operated 73 gyms and 75 outlets across the UK.
Managing Director Martin Long said: “After Covid-19, we were in a position where the government ordered us to close our retail store portfolio and our entire gym chain for a long era, leaving us with a consistent top base charge and 0 revenue.
“The resolve to appoint administrators was not taken lightly, but it will give us the most productive possibility to protect viable parts of the business, make them successful, and secure as many jobs as possible.”
Long said in April that the company’s revenue source amounted to about 15 million pounds a month, but had fallen to 0, while still having a monthly payroll of 3 million pounds.
Meanwhile, Moray City Council reminded others that Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement of the reopening of the recreation centres in the middle of next month “is not a displayed date” and will remain under consideration.
The local authority added that plans are being made to prepare the amenities before they can re-accommodate customers.
A council spokesman added: “When we reopen our recreational and sports facilities, to ensure the protection of our staff and the public, there will be a new cleaning program that can limit course schedules and the capacity of some places.
“There will also be a new reserve formula to allow traceability for all users in the event of a local Covid-19 outbreak.”
