Where: Queen Street, Exeter, EX4 3SP

A sublime hotel indeed, the Mercure Rougemont in the center of bustling Exeter has some skeletons in its closet, well, not literally Array. that would be too much for this article.

Before the Victorian hotel built in the 1870s, the site was occupied by a criminal for borrowers and Mr. Howard insurance said it “the worst thing I’ve ever known in all of England. “

To date, some of the hotel’s basements have remained as at the time of prison.

The mast you’ll now see at the front of the hotel marks the place where the prisoners were hanged and, until recently, the old chaining irons were still attached to the basement walls of the Drakes Bar.

In the original building, a six-step stretch of steps leading to the lobby was paved with tiles that said, “Welcome to the end, speed up the separating guest” and this is still hidden under the existing carpet.

There are many accounts of a ghost of the “Grey Lady” who noticed that she was coming down the stairs in the early hours of the morning.

Apparently, she invited the hotel when it opened and gassed into the room.

From that day on, he is said to wander in search of peace.
