AMSTERDAM: Ajax Amsterdam could run out of several key players after 11 team members tested positive for coVID-19 front of Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Midtjylland, RTL reported.

Ajax travelled to Denmark on Monday with only 17 players indexed on the team on their website. The club would disclose the names of players inflamed with the virus due to confidentiality rules.

Captain Dusan Tadic, goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielders Davy Klaassen and Ryan Gravenberch were scheduled to start Group D in Herning, but were excluded from the team.

Alternate goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg also omitted, leaving a goalkeeper, Kjell Scherpen, for the trip.

Coach Erik ten Hag is scheduled for a press conference later on Monday.

Dutch media reported that secondary tests were being conducted on Monday for those affected in the hope that the effects could be negative and that more players could go to Denmark, but that they would want UEFA’s permission to do so.

According to the regulations of the governing body of ECU football, Ajax will have to play the game if thirteen or more players on their A-list are available.

Ajax are third in Group D of the Champions League with one point in two matches, five issues adrift from leader Liverpool and 3 from Atalanta. Midtjylland is down after losing his first two games. The first two qualify for the playoff phase.
