HISTORY: The Portuguese, football leaks’ online page, said at the beginning of his trial on Friday (September 4) that he was proud to be a whistleblower of the big deals of European football clubs.
No cameras were allowed inside the court, but a lawyer for Rui Pinto’s defense team said the 31-year-old “has hope, self-confidence and determination.”
Pinto, a former history student and self-taught computer scientist, faces 90 fees – not authorized to know and rape correspondence for an attempted extortion – in the case before the Central Criminal Court in Lisbon.
“I’m not a hacker. I’m a whistleblower,” he said, dressed in an anti-coronavirus mask, dressed in jeans and shoes and seeking calm during his opening statement.
“The revelations are serious and I am proud, there is no shame.I didn’t do anything for money,” added Pinto, who admits to having published 70 million documents on the backroom of football.
Pinto also took over to leak thousands of files on alleged monetary plans of former Angolan daughter Isabel dos Santos, but told the court that her escape efforts were over.
“My task as a whistleblower is over,” he said.
In the case of dos Santos, Angola opened investigations of criminals but denied misunderstood.
Knowledge of Football Leaks noticed through Reuters as a component of the European Research Collaborations network showed how some of the richest and most vital personalities have strayed from taxes by channeling their source of income abroad and providing information about the wealthy people and organizations in the Gulf who have become influential in football.
He also looked at the massive sums of cash circulating in the big clubs and the asymmetrical one in which the government enforces the rules.
The documents provided some of the evidence that led to a ban, since it was cancelled, from Manchester City of the English Premier League of the European Champions League for alleged violations of monetary fair play rules.
Pinto’s identity was not revealed until after his arrest.
Previously, he called himself “John” when he talked to reporters, saying he was looking for the data, not the person. He never explained how he received the data or who had helped him.
Pinto arrested in January 2019 on the street in Budapest, a town he first met as an Erasmus student and returned to in 2015 after obtaining a degree in History.
Extradited to a Portuguese criminal in March, placed under space arrest and now under witness protection, he faces up to 25 years in prison for the fees against him.
Whistleblowers from Sporting Football Club, the Portuguese Football Federation, investment fund Dean Sports and law firm PLMJ were scheduled for the trial to open on Monday.
Dean’s lawyer, Sofia Branco Ribeiro, accused Pinto of illegally accessing his knowledge and attempting to extort the company for 1 million euros ($1.18 million).
Pinto’s lawyer, Francisco Teixeira da Moto, the “unfortunate” accusations.
Police maintained court barriers.
The trial is expected to last until December and come with the testimony of forty-five witnesses, adding Edward Snowden.
