PARIS – Neymar of Paris St Germain was unable to participate in two matches for beating Alvaro González of Olympique de Marseille in last Sunday’s violent 1-0 defeat in Ligue 1, organizers announced Wednesday.
The league added that defenseman Alvaro was under investigation after Neymar accused the Spaniard of using racist language towards him during the match, in which a total of five players were expelled after a massive fight during the discount time.
PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa has been sanctioned for six matches, the strongest penalty of all, for his role in the late clash between the two rivals, while Marseille defender Jordan Amavi has been sanctioned for 3 matches.
Neymar, the world’s top wanted player, automatically suspended from Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Metz for the red card, as teammate Leandro Paredes for also seeing red against Marseille, and both players are also suspended from Sunday’s attack in Nice.
Neymar and Paredes, who have also won a sanction suspended for an additional one-match sanction, will return to the Stade de Reims on 27 September.
Marseille striker Dario Benedetto was suspended from a game, while PSG’s Angel di Maria, who had been warned for the attack but was not punished for the fight, was called to attend an assembly of the league’s disciplinary committee next Wednesday.
Neymar had justified attacking Alvaro by claiming that the Spaniard had racially assaulted him, but Alvaro has denied Neymar’s accusation.
“With regard to Alvaro González, given the nature of the facts, the Commission has made the decision to position the case under investigation,” the league added (Report via Richard Martin edited through Tothrough Davis).
