Football rescheduled: Marseille vs Lyon returns to Marseille, without disciplinary action

(Reuters) – The Ligue 1 match between Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais, rescheduled for Dec. 6 after being postponed due to a problem with Lyon’s team bus, will be played at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome, the French league (LFP) said. .

The disciplinary commission said it would take any action following the incident. The move upset Lyon, who said he would appeal the decision.

The opening match, scheduled for October 29, was cancelled after the Lyon team bus was thrown with bottles and stones, injuring coach Fabio Grosso, as the players made their way to the Stade Velodrome.

On 2 November, the LFP announced the date of the postponed match, but without specifying the venue, and Lyon’s director of football, Vincent Ponsot, asked for the match to be played at a separate venue. Instead, the LFP rescheduled the Marseille match.

“The LFP Competitions Commission has decided, following the data and promises through the Prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône, to play the match Olympique de Marseille – Olympique Lyonnais, corresponding to the tenth round of Ligue 1, at the Vélodrome de Orange, on Wednesday, December 6, 2023,” the LFP said.

After the disciplinary committee said it would not sanction Marseille because the incidents occurred on public roads and the host club was not at fault, Lyon said it would appeal the decision.

“Olympique Lyonnais is deeply shocked by the disciplinary committee’s decision to declare itself incompetent to deal with the incredibly serious incidents that seriously hindered the arrival of its professional team near the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday, October 29,” the club said in a statement. . .

Lyon is last in Ligue 1 with four points after 10 games. Marseille is ninth with thirteen points.
