Former Romanian and Turkish coach Mircea Lucescu has been appointed coach of Dynamo Kyiv, the Ukrainian announced on Thursday.
Lucescu, who will turn 75 next Wednesday, had in the past turned Shakhtar Donetsk into a force to be taken into account in the Ukrainian and foreign scene.
After joining Shakhtar in May 2004, he won 8 Ukrainian league names, five national cups and won the Europa League name in 2009 with the club, at his best a successful coach.
Lucescu, who has also coached Inter Milan, Galatasaray and Besiktas in Turkey, Zenit St Petersburg and several clubs, has signed a two-year contract and the agreement includes a one-year option.
“I hope Dynamo Kyiv’s victorious traditions will revive with the arrival of Lucescu and his training team,” Dynamo President Ihor Surkis said.
“I hope he wins many titles and that enthusiasts will compare Mircea through his results. Good for him!
Lucescu replaces Oleksiy Mykhaylychenko, who was fired Monday after Dynamo’s disappointing season.
Dynamo, Ukraine’s most popular and successful club with 15 league titles since 1993, finished the moment in the league with 23 Shakhtar tracks, which has won the championship in more than 4 seasons. (Report through Angel Krasimirov edited through Alexandra Hudson)
