German minnows will have to raise 400, 000 euros so they don’t get insolvent.
Chemnitzer finished 17th in the Bundesliga 3 in 2019-20 and was relegated to fourth place in German football.
Ballack is now promoting 40 of his shirts, worn for Germany, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, to their first club to survive.
The 98-match German midfielder with Chemnitzer between 1983 and 1997.
Ballack’s 14 years at the club covered periods in the youth team, until the moment XI and despite everything in the first team.
And he has made a minimum offer of 180 euros for the shirt, some of which now go to more than 1000 euros, adding his German shirt of Euro 2008.
Chemnitzer, in former East Germany, wants about 400,000 euros and, according to a statement from the club, sales have already raised about 300,000 euros.
They will have to raise the last 100,000 euros until mid-August to stay afloat and avoid falling into insolvency.
All T-shirts donated through Ballack come with their iconic No13 splashed on the back.
While many players avoid the “unfortunate” number, Ballack explained why he had sought to have it.
He told the Independent, “The other players don’t need it yet, that’s why I need it.”
“I have no challenge with that. I’m not superstitious. I love the number and a player on the team will have to wear the 13”.
“And it has to be because you have to manage the number.
“Maybe because I grew up like this, we didn’t even have faith in East Germany.
“I have no faith anymore. That’s general for me.”
