Inter’s former head coach Gigi Simoni, who led to the glory of the UEFA Cup in 1998, inspired by Ronaldo, died at the age of 81. (More football news)
His death was announced through Inter on the day the club celebrated the tenth anniversary of their hat-trick in Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia.
Simoni has had a busy training career and has guided seven groups to the promotion of Serie B to Italy’s elite, a record.
He suffered a stroke last June from which he never fully recovered and was taken to hospital when his fitness began to worsen some time before his death, the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported.
Simoni has coached clubs such as Lazio, Napoli, Turin, Brescia and Cremonese, but it could be said that his time came with Inter when the Nerazzurri beat Lazio 3-0 at the Parc des Princes on 6 May 1998 to win the European trophy.
On Friday, Inter issued a saying: “Today, May 22nd, he left us. Not any date, the maximum date similar to Inter’s.
“We are Gigi Simoni and we miss everything about him. First and foremost, his way of being a gentleman. His way of life, neither in life nor in football, has never been exaggerated. His football is a reflection of this: he was humble, functional and able to make the most of what he had to offer.”
Goals from Ivan Zamorano, Javier Zanetti and Ronaldo gave Inter their third UEFA Cup of the 1990s.
This was how Ronaldo’s first season at the club happened after his departure from Barcelona, before the Brazilian suffered the injuries that tarnished his stay in San Siro.
Simoni’s Inter almost earned the name Serie A that season, completing five tracks for the Juventus champions at the scene.
The experienced coach won the Panchina d’Oro – Golden Bench – for his achievements in this 1997–98 campaign, he lost his homework before Christmas the following season.
Lazio and Napoli were some of the clubs that conceived Simoni’s family circle for news of her death.
Cremonese, whom he led in Serie A and also an Anglo-Italian Cup triumph over Derby County at Wembley in 1993, paid tribute.
They reflected on his achievements during a four-year stay, which was earned to him by the club’s coach of the century, declaring: “Travel well Gigi, we will miss you but you will remain in the history of the cremonese and in the hearts of all Grigiorossi fans.” . “
The Inter on its official online website concluded: “World football has lost a wonderful coach and a glorious person.
“This is how he is: with his gray hairs, on our bench, while enjoying Ronaldo’s magic with a smile on his face, wrapped in the affection of hobby. Goodthroughe Gigi, we’re going to miss you.”
