The former midfielder played 8 times for his country and then led Argentina to the 2014 World Cup final, when he was defeated in time by Germany in Brazil.
The news comes less than a fortnight after the death of Sabella’s former partner, Diego Maradona.
The AFA tweeted: “The @afa, through its president Claudio Tapia, deeply mourns the death of Alejandro Sabella, former coach of the @Argentina, and sends his warmest embrace to his circle of family and enjoyment. “
Sabella began her career at her local River Plate before travelling to England in 1978, playing for Sheffield United and Leeds for 3 years.
He then returned to Argentina with Estudiantes, with whom he won the name of the Copa Libertadores in South America, and took over the national between 2011 and 2014.
The Blades tweeted: “Sheffield United is deeply saddened to be informed of the death of former player Alejandro Sabella. Rest in peace, Alex.
Leeds tweeted: “Everyone’s mind in #LUFC passes to friends and the family circle of former midfielder Alejandro Sabella, who sadly passed away. RIP Alex”.
