Nothing in football divides both the opinion and the assistant referee video (VAR) and the effect it has on key decision-making.
Despite tons of negative reactions in its first full Premier League season (2019/20), the VAR will continue to be used through referees next season, although some changes have been made in the hope that it will be a more effective system.
Shareholders at an annual Premier League meeting agreed that VAR will remain during the 2020/21 season, in accordance with FIFA protocol.
Manchester United’s official online website has shown 4 settings to the VAR that we can expect to put into effect next season.
It is puzzling to see that the monitors in the box are used so sparingly through the referees in the box last season. This is expected to be replaced in the next campaign, and officials are now encouraged to move to the box and verify repetitions of contentious decisions.
United won 14 layouts in the 19/20 season, the top of the Premier League. They changed to 10, with a good fortune rate of 71.4%.
Next season, the consequences will recover if the goalkeeper’s foot goes off the line and stops the shot. But if a player misses the goal while the goalkeeper is offline, the referee will order a replay.
In a key rule change, referees can penalize players for invading shots if they have a direct influence on the game. This can be just a bounce attempt or a clearing after a stop.
There have been countless questionable offside decisions that went to the VAR last season, however, the Premier League has shown that any frame game ball that crosses the line of the last defender will be out of play without tolerance.
In addition, when an offensive team has a chance to score a goal, the line judges will keep their flag down until the game ends before raising the flag if there was an offside.
This avoids the confusion that occurred last season when some players were chasing and others not when a player was obviously in an offside position.
