TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida state coach Mike Norvell supports the resolve to postpone Saturday’s Seminole game to No. four Clemsonsons after the Tigers reported a positive player check after arriving on campus, adding that even if he and his team were looking to play there were protection concerns.
“We’ve made the right resolution, ” said Norevell on Monday.
The game was cancelled hours before Saturday’s start when medical groups at any of the schools may simply disagree that it will be played.
Clemson presented the state of Florida with a series of additional tests and postponed the start until Saturday, or even Sunday or Monday.
Tigers coach Dabo Swinney was angered by the decision and said Florida state directors had COVID-19 as an “excuse” not to play.
Norvell, who had COVID-19 and missed a game before this season, said the resolution is based entirely on the coronavirus and protection of his team.
“Football coaches aren’t doctors, some of us might think we are,” Norvell said. “There is an explanation as to why these (medical) advisors should make these decisions based on the data provided. “
Norvell said he tried to call Swinney on Saturday, but the two had logged in and talked.
Clemson’s athletic director, Dan Radakovich, said Monday on the ACC network that Swinney was the biggest defender of his players, “and he will be. “
“His comments,” ad said, “though perhaps a little discouraging to some, were his feelings. “
Radakovich said he would contact the ACC about rescheduling the game. Both have open dates on December 12, a week before the league championship game.
Swinney said Sunday that the state of Florida lost the game and that if the Seminoles were looking to catch up with him, they would have to play Clemson or pay about $300,000 from the sports arm for expenses.
Norvell expects them to meet in the state of Florida on December 12.
In reaction to Swinney’s comments on spending, Florida State coach said that if Clemson needed donations to offset the Florida State position, “then I’ll make a sign to make one. “
