England didn’t put in their best performance against Brazil on Saturday, losing 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley, but Declan Rice impressed on an individual level.
After the game, Gareth Southgate praised the midfielder, suggesting that the 25-year-old’s game has reached a new level.
“I think Declan [Rice] was extraordinary in the game,” Southgate said. “With and without the ball.
“[He] showed the next step that he’s taken towards. He’s a player for us anyway, but he looked absolutely comfortable in this kind of environment.
“We are missing some, we don’t have many six midfielders in the league. “
It’s hard to see anything too reprehensible in those quotes. Anyone who has watched the game will agree that Rice was highly intelligent and did not seem intimidated by opposition or circumstance.
It’s also unfair to say that the Premier League lacks English players who can play that role at the same time as Rice. He’s in his own world in this case.
Still, West Ham enthusiasts were still through the comments.
Damien Charles Lucas of Hammers News wrote that the comments were “disrespectful” to West Ham, calling the quotes “lazy” and a demonstration of Southgate’s “obvious bias”.
Lucas says it’s “just not true that [Rice’s] game has evolved so much since he left West Ham. “
Meanwhile, on West Ham’s fan site, Claret
He said: “Despite Southgate’s enthusiastic praise, I’ve noticed that Rice plays much better for West Ham. “
One thing is for sure: those enthusiasts saw Rice at his most productive against West Ham.
Perhaps the midfielder’s goal and two Man of the Match assists in February, as Arsenal beat the Hammers 6-0, remain a sore point.
