Gary Neville and Paul Scholes have delivered their verdict on whether Manchester United will end up in the 4 most sensitive and qualify for the Champions League next season.
The Red Devils seemed to head to 3rd place with 3 points, however, they secured themselves against Southampton on Monday night, however, the Saints’ overdue draw had a major influence on their hopes.
The 2-2 draw left United fifth in the Premier League, Leicester City fourth by difference of purpose and Chelsea third through a point.
However, Neville believes United is still on track to finish in the four most sensitive, with former right-back also supporting Chelsea to finish the quarter-finals alongside Liverpool and Manchester City.
“I would have put Manchester United at the forefront if it hadn’t happened at the last minute because they’re in a wonderful way,” Neville said in the most recent episode of his Sky Sports podcast.
“They were given Crystal Palace on Thursday, which turned out to be inactive. I in the match against Chelsea a few weeks ago and they played pretty well, but they had disappointing matches in and around that.
“Chelsea had Norwich City tonight and is expected to do the job. But Leicester has had some matches. Leicester has Tottenham on Sunday and Sheffield United before that, with United on the last day.”
“You would say right now, Manchester United and Chelsea are still favourites. But this opposite result of Southampton will only sow in their minds the doubt that it existed before.”
And midfielder Scholes echoed comments from his former teammate and predicted that the last game of the United League season, a clash with Leicester’s 4 most sensitive rivals, would be a successful match.
Scholes told Premier League Productions: “I don’t think (the most sensible race 4) has replaced so much. Obviously, they would have liked to win the game and get into the three most sensitive ones. But they still have to win the games. Training
“Even though they had won 3 or 4-1, it didn’t matter. They still have to beat Crystal Palace, West Ham, then Leicester. I still think that’s the case.
“Leicester will be a tough match, we know, but it’s exciting until the end of the season for the neutrals to see.”
United faces Crystal Palace and West Ham and Leicester face Sheffield United and Tottenham before the 4 most sensitive contenders clash at King Power Stadium.
Meanwhile, Chelsea receives Norwich City on Tuesday night before Liverpool and Wolves.
