Pierre Gasly admits that he thought he was about to hit the wall by ahead of Sergio Perez in the Eau Rouge race at the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix.
Gasly outperded the Mexican in the short directly between the first corner and Eau Rouge, with racing point’s driving force rushing him as he crossed.
The Frenchman made several ball moves in the race until he completed eighth place, a result that earned him the “pilot of the day” award.
Reflecting on the war with Perez, Gasly said, “Honestly, I think we were on the wall.I’m not kidding! I was an intern and I was thinking ” I can’t move any more than that, ” and at that point we went to 280, three hundred km/h.Sergio hugged me. I think, “I don’t go up, step to do this job.”It was tight. Sergio is a tough runner, I knew it, still there sure, my center rate went up slightly, but it was compromised and it was great.”
“You expect respect from everyone, you know where the line is and you must not cross it.It’s on edge, but there’s room for a car and stuff.”
Gasly got off to a smart start from 12th place on the grill with hard tires, but AlphaTauri decided not to place it under the safety car, meaning that when he made his stop, he crashed well into the box before returning to packing in the last laps.
The Frenchman surprised by the speed he showed at Spa, especially on the hard tyre in the early stages of the race.
“I have to say it’s a little tricky at first compared to the other guys with the [medium] option, so I tried to stay clean, to stay close to the boys in front.I’m happy to take both positions in the first round, because we didn’t expect it.
“We expected to have a little trouble like in the first 3 laps, and it was quite the opposite.I felt good. I had a lot of rhythm compared to the other guys and then I made some moves right away.”
