Three-year-old rookie quarterback Jake Fromm is gone, as is his dynamic teammate Andre Swift. Replacing the two, in addition to 3 offensive linemen, is not an easy task. Wake Forest Jamie Newman’s play will likely start the season in the middle in Athens after throwing more than 2,800 yards and 26 touchdowns a year ago. Graduate movers can take on a lot of offensive everyday jobs with little time to get familiar with the Georgian system. Fortunately for Newman, wide receiver George Pickens is back after leading the Bulldogs with 727 yards and 8 touchdowns as a rookie.
But once again, defense is the call of the game in Athens.Kirby Smart has 8 returning players who have at least 8 games in 2019.Local supporter Monty Rice has 38 career appearances in Georgia and will debut the year on the butkus Award pre-season watchlist: awarded to the most productive supporter in school football.Rice led the UGA with 89 tackles last season plus 3 TFLLs and 3 pass failures, which earned him the all-SEC team honors of the moment a year ago.
Experience is a Georgia defense issue, and no Bulldog has more on that aspect of the ball than Richard LeCounte protection, as the senior has started each and every game, but one in the more than two seasons.LeCounte finished his youthful crusade with 61 tackles and led the Bulldogs in interceptions (4), breakaways (3) and the team lead with a pair of forced loose balls.Check the maximum pre-season defensive watchlists and look for the Name of LeCounte. He made the first cut for the Bednarik, Thorpe and Nagurski Awards.
Georgia ranks fifth in our most sensible preseason 25.Here’s the breakdown:
UGA loses a lot of stars, from quarterback Jake Fromm and RB D’Andre Swift to his experienced offensive line players, but when it comes to talent, Georgia will be between Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State.with Jamie Newman’s move from Wake Forest QB opting for UGA.Dawgs will also once back have one of the defenses in the country.
