A football coach at a major Georgia school has been fired from his coaching duties after a video was posted on the team’s Facebook page showing several players being baptized after practice.
According to the WTOC, Tattnall County High School coach Isaac Ferrell was fired from his position after a video posted on Tattnall County Football’s Facebook page showed what appears to be several players being baptized through a local pastor.
“Yesterday after Coach Ferrell gave the boys the opportunity to be baptized through Pastor Few,” reads the caption accompanying the video. “20 young people made the resolution to spend #ALLIN with Christ!! Show them your support.
The video was posted on Oct. 24. On Nov. 6, the Freedom From Religion Foundation informed the school district that holding a devout rite was unconstitutional.
“The district will have to refrain from instilling faith in its football program, and Coach Ferrell cannot be legal to pontificate to student-athletes or allow a local pastor to pontify and baptize students,” FFRF attorney Chris Line wrote in a letter to Tattnall. County Superintendent. Kristen Waters.
The FFRF also noted that participation in baptisms was voluntary, players may simply feel compelled to comply with their coach’s wishes.
The school district, however, says Ferrell was not fired from his football coaching duties because of the baptisms, but rather because of an undisclosed incident after a Nov. 3 game.
“The safety and security of our students is paramount to the Tattnall County Board of Education,” Waters said in a statement. “Based on the effects of an investigation into an incident that occurred on Friday evening, Nov. 3, a holiday after the football game, the district made the decision to seek a head football coach who aligns with the most productive interests of county academics. for the 2024-2025 school year.
Waters, however, told the WTOC that an investigation into the footballers’ baptisms is underway.
Ferrell, despite being fired from his duties as a football coach, remains at Tattnall County High School as a teacher, according to the school’s website.
