CHICAGO (AP) – Borussia Dortmund midfielder Gio Reyna, son of former U. S. captain Claudio Reyna, was called up to the U. S. national team for the first time.
He is on a 24-player list announced Tuesday for exhibitions in Wales on 12 November and opposes Panama 4 days later in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
The adjustment in Wales, on the eve of Reyna’s 18th birthday, will be only the time of the pandemic year for the Americans, who beat Costa Rica 1-0 on February 1 with a list of players basically from Major League Soccer. The team is preparing for the start of the World Cup qualifiers, which are likely to be postponed until next September.
Reyna is one of 10 players who have just made their national team debut and among the six young players who have playing time in Europe. Reyna is joined by 17-year-old Valencian midfielder Yunus Musah and 17-year-old Bayern Munich defender Chris. Richards, Eindhoven midfielder Richard Ledezma; Midfielder Sebastian Soto, who scored five goals in six games while on loan at the Netherlands second division Telstar after being transferred to Norwich in England from Hannover, Germany, last summer; and ahead Nicholas Gioacchini, who has two goals in seven games this season for Caen, France’s second-placed team.
Johnny Cardoso, a 19-year-old defensive midfielder for the Brazilian International, is the first player from a team outside North America or Europe to be called up from midfielder Cobi Jones with Brazilian Vasco da Gama in 1996.
Others who can do his deyet are Chituru Odunze, an 18-year-old goalkeeper who was transferred from Vancouver to Leicester Academy in August 2019; and a couple of 19-year-old Plos Angeles players who have dressed this season for European clubs and have not yet made their deyets: Barcelona striker Konrad of the Angels Fuente and Wolverhampion midfielder Owen Otasowie.
An American record is on the Champions League Player List, adding Christian Pulisic of Chelsea, who is lately on the US list after getting injured in Saturday’s warm-up before Chelsea’s match against Burnley.
“They did a scan that showed a very slight hamcap tendon injury and is back abroad,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said Tuesday. “It may not have compatibility tomorrow, but we’ll see later. “
The Americans have not played a FIFA event with the highest of their group of players since winning Cuba 4-0 in the CONCACAF League of Nations on November 19. Exhibitions in March in the Netherlands and Wales were cancelled, as well as the CONCACAF League of Nations final in June and the start of World Cup qualifying in September.
