Gomes meeting for Portugal

Andre Gomes is included in Portgual’s birthday party for next month’s League of Nations clashes with Croatia and Sweden, while Stephen of the Republic of Ireland’s first team, Stephen Kenny, includes Everton captain Seamus Coleman.

Everton midfielder Gomes recalled through coach Fernando Santos last year as an unused substitute for matches against Luxembourg and Ukraine.

He missed his country’s next date after suffering an ankle that severely interrupted the 2019/20 27-year-old’s 2019/20 campaign.

Gomes, who won the recent high of his 29 international matches in March 2018, has returned from his break to play 11 games for Everton before the end of his last term.

Defending champions Portugal begin their League of Nations crusade against Croatia in Porto on Saturday, September 5.

Santos, who orchestrated Portugal’s good fortune at the 2016 European Championships, takes his team to Stockholm for the match with Sweden 3 days later, on Tuesday 8 September.

The Republic of Ireland, for its part, starts the League of Nations with one to Bulgaria on 3 September and receives Finland 3 days later at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Kenny has replaced Mick McCarthy at the helm and is about to retain Coleman as the patron of his team, the sideman to climb to the 56 international matches he has won since his debut about 10 years ago.
