Social media is absolutely awash with tributes this afternoon, after the saddening news of the legendary Jack Charlton’s passing was confirmed.
Englishman Charlton is widely-regarded as one of the Three Lions’ most iconic-ever football figures.
The central-defender was part of the country’s only World Cup winning squad in 1966, with Charlton having racked up 6 goals across a total of 35 international caps.
The Northumberland native also holds legend status amongst fans of Leeds United, with Charlton having lined out for the Whites for 21 years from 1952 to 1973.
After calling time on his playing career, the stopper unsurprisingly made the move into management, having long been heralded for his understanding of the game’s finest details.
Charlton went on to sit in the dugout of all of Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United, though it was his exploits whilst in charge of the Republic of Ireland that will no doubt live longest in the memory.
The tactician oversaw what most agree stands as the finest Irish side in history, with the Boys in Green having made it all the way to the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup under Charlton’s guidance.
As such, having left such a profound mark on the game’s history, it has come as little surprise to see an outpouring of emotional tributes online, on the back of the news of Charlton’s death.
