NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot in Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in the thrilling first leg of the Champions League semifinal on Tuesday, and the striker scored another hit for an Englishman in the process.
Vinicius Junior discovered the opposite of the game’s development to give Madrid the lead in the 24th minute in Munich, but Bayern regrouped after the break to dip back into the festival and level what promises to be an intriguing second leg.
Leroy Sané, who had previously created a golden opportunity over the bar, equalized for the hosts in the 53rd minute, cutting down the right flank and unleashing a devastating shot that beat Andriy Lunin.
Thomas Tuchel then had a chance to take the lead just before the hour mark at the Allianz Arena when Lucas Vazquez awkwardly stuck out a leg and brought down Jamal Musiala for a penalty.
England captain Kane kept his cool by converting from 12 yards, taking his tally to 43 goals in 43 appearances for Bayern in all competitions in what has been a phenomenal debut season from an individual perspective.
The goal also saw Kane break the record for most goals (11) by an English player in a single Champions League campaign after eight goals and three assists at Europe’s premier festival this season – him ahead of Steven Gerrard (10) and David Beckham. (ten).
Bayern looked set to get a slight merit at the Bernabeu in a week’s time, but Madrid had other ideas, with Vinicius Junior himself scoring a penalty in the 83rd minute after Rodrygo fouled through Kim Min-jae.
Analysing the entertaining first leg in the TNT Sports studio, former Real Madrid and England striker Michael Owen said there was “never any doubt” when Kane stepped up to take the penalty.
“There’s no doubt about that when he’s on the penalty spot. He’s a very no-nonsense player,” Owen said.
“He will be very happy to be able to score in a Champions League final. “
Owen believes the draw is “really balanced” heading into the second leg after what he described as a “strange game” in Munich.
“I thought the two consequences were pretty clumsy, so it was one each!It was a bit strange because I thought Bayern had dominated the first 20 minutes, we expected them to score and capitalise on that dominance and suddenly Real Madrid scored. ” he added.
“The second half starts and you think Bayern are passing behind them and they didn’t. They made a couple of passes with nothing and were suddenly in control ten minutes into the second half.
“Madrid didn’t press too hard and then also scored a goal after a penalty error, so it was a strange game, but entertaining nonetheless. It’s well balanced.
