Manchester United have a long history as an England international and Kobbie Main joined that long history this season.
The likes of Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson and Gary Neville racked up caps for England while wearing the famous United shirt.
Euro 2024 is now on the horizon and United will once again be represented through England; However, some have been very lucky.
Marcus Rashford has paid the price for a disappointing campaign and has been called up to the England squad for this summer.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is still the underdog while Luke Shaw is in the team, but he may miss Euro 2024 due to his lingering injuries.
Kobbie Mainoo joined the team after a decisive season and may have a real chance to start playing in Germany this summer.
Mainoo will sign Harry Maguire for England this summer, and the centre-back has a better chance of appearing than Shaw as he also returns from injury.
Maguire will start in the centre of England’s defensive line if he can improve his fitness in the coming weeks.
The 31-year-old has faced complaints over the years but has had a decent season with United and has forged himself for England.
Ahead of Euro 2024, Maguire spoke on England’s official website about his favourite XI of English players over the years.
The likes of Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore and Paul Gascoigne have been retained, with Maguire opting for a 3-5-2 formation.
Three former United players were also included, along with David Beckham.
Maguire praised Beckham as a “great icon” and highlighted his memorable free-kick against Greece in 2001 as a true pinnacle.
“I need Beckham, another wonderful icon. There are so many moments when I think back to my formative years watching England and football. He was who you wanted to be. I don’t forget his free-kick against Greece as the highlight,” Maguire said.
Maguire then named Michael Carrick in midfield, even though he felt the former United ace hadn’t won as many appearances as he deserved.
Carrick has amassed more than 300 appearances for United but has only been capped 34 times by England despite his quality at Old Trafford, and Maguire calls him “smart”.
“I worked with Michael Carrick at Manchester United and I know how capable and intelligent he is. I don’t think he’s had as many opportunities with England as he would have liked, but he’s the one I’d like to play with. He protected the defense very well and took the ball very well,” Maguire said.
The latest former United player has called up Wayne Rooney to Maguire’s squad, who will continue to be one of United’s and England’s absolute greats.
253 goals in 559 games for United, 53 goals in 120 games for England; Rooney is simply exceptional for the club and the country.
Maguire noted that he would play Rooney simply as Harry Kane in his dream XI and praised Rooney as “world class” and “a bit underrated”.
“Right next to ‘H’ will be Wayne Rooney, so in combination we have two record goalscorers for England. If you put them on the same team, you’re guaranteed to score goals. “He’s one of the greatest English players of all time. In my opinion, it’s probably still a bit underrated. I also talk to him a lot about the game and he knows that well,” Maguire said.
Maguire made his England debut in 2017, starting with a 1-0 win over Lithuania just weeks after leaving Hull City to sign for Leicester City.
The centre-back was a key component of the England squad under Gareth Southgate and played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
United called up in 2019 and paid a huge fee to bring Maguire to Old Trafford.
Maguire has continued to rack up caps for England and has therefore been a mainstay of the team in three major tournaments.
Maguire will now add to that record by betting on Euro 2024, while fit, and bring the legacy of United players in an England shirt.
Mainoo will sign Maguire to the team and will be in a position to replace Maguire to become a regular at United and England in the coming years.
