Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart said he felt like he “started again” after signing for Tottenham Hotspur on a loose play on Tuesday, admitting he had had “a tough few years.”
The 33-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Spurs with the club and reportedly agreed to pay him 50,000 euros ($66,000) a week, the same as his salary at an unsuccessful time with Burnley.
“We are very happy to announce Joe Hart’s signing on a contract until 2022,” reads in a Spurs statement on his website.
Hart will compete with Paulo Gazzaniga to sit on the bench, and get the go-ahead for League Cup or Europa League matches, as a substitute for French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, winner of the World Cup, whose way is far from consistent last season.
Hart has attracted the interest of various clubs ranging from newly promoted Premier League club Leeds United to current Derby County and Scottish champion Celtic.
“There is no escape. It has been a few years for me personally, but I feel like I have a lot to give,” he said on the club’s website.
“I’m here to paint as a team, whether my call is on the team sheet or not, it’s a team effort.
“I know what it takes to win titles and improve a team’s dynamics.
“I have great admiration for Hugo, one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world.
“I feel like I’m starting over, I appreciate that feeling. My body is definitely ready.
The fall of Hart’s grace has been dramatic, led by the arrival of Pep Guardiola as Manchester City coach in 2016.
Guardiola clarified that Hart, who won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup with City, is not his goalkeeper type and sent him on loan to Italian club Turin and then West Ham.
Hart nevertheless discovered a more permanent home with Burnley in 2018, but finished as Nick Pope’s number two last season.
Hart’s career abroad has resented as a result and he has been chosen for the 2018 World Cup team.
He has added to his 75 international matches, which included appearances at two European Championships (2012/16) and the 2014 World Cup final, since November 2017.
