Has Florian Wirtz signed a new contract with Bayer Leverkusen? Earlier this week, German magazine Kicker reported that Wirtz had not only agreed to a new deal, but had already signed it. The report suggests that Wirtz had agreed to extend his contract from 2027 to at least 2028. The deal would also particularly increase his salary and make him the club’s winner.
According to the Capology website, Wirtz is currently earning 4. 5 million euros ($4. 71 million) in Leverkusen. The site lists Nordi Mukiele, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, as the highest-paid player. Among Leverkusen’s permanent players, Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick are worth €6 million ($6. 28 million). There is no doubt that the new agreement with Wirtz will exceed the numbers.
The real question at this stage is whether Wirtz has actually signed a new contract. According to Kicker, that is already the case. The magazine published a breaking news story on Dec. 16, 2024, suggesting that not only is an agreement in place but that a deal has been signed.
This story was sparked by a Bayer Leverkusen official. “Bayer 04 has maintained a very close and trusting relationship with Florian Wirtz and his family for many years,” he says. “Contractual issues will continue to be discussed exclusively between the management of Bayer 04 and the Wirtz family. “
The statement then continued: “Should there be any changes to the current contractual situation (until 2027), Bayer 04 will, of course, continue to deal with this as before and in agreement with the Wirtz family. We ask for your understanding that we will not comment further on this topic.”
In words, Leverkusen did not show or deny that Wirtz had signed a new contract with the club. But why would the club hesitate to check that Wirtz had signed a new contract if that were the case?
Much of this may simply be due to timing. Depending on the length of the deal, Leverkusen will have to wait until the new year to make it official, as that would allow for a longer duration. Another explanation may be that the club has planned an official announcement in front of its fans on Saturday when Leverkusen hosts Freiburg for the last Bundesliga match of the year.
Anyway, for now, the Wirtz saga continues. Without a new contract, Leverkusen could be forced to sell the 21-year-old, who along with Jamal Musiala is the world’s most valuable German player with a market price of 130 million euros ($136 million) on the Transfermarkt market, next summer. Bayern Munich was the club most interested. Rekordmeister would love to reunite Germany’s two most valuable players. But even without the official announcement of Wirtz’s contract renewal, such a deal is unlikely to be reached for Bayern Munich.
After all, where there is smoke, there is fire. Kicker’s track record of reporting on German football is remarkably accurate. Furthermore, the fact that Wirtz needs to stay at Leverkusen until at least 2026 before moving on has, in all likelihood, been an open secret in German football for some time.
With all this in mind, Leverkusen may still have to verify a new contract, but it seems like it is only a matter of time before that happens.
