“He makes things fun” – Xavi brings hope to Leipzig after signing permanent deal

When Xavi took the floor and discovered the net in a 2-0 win outside the gates he can on October 19, he may not have imagined that he would soon be through the next 3 months with an ankle injury that would see him miss 15 games for club and country.  

It was thus with a beaming smile that the Amsterdam native took to the pre-match warm-up for Sunday’s Matchday 16 encounter against Werder Bremen, Xavi learning he would be back in Marco Rose’s starting XI for a vital date in Leipzig’s calendar.

In his 65 minutes of action, the Netherlands international wowed the home fans at the Red Bull Arena, scoring an impressive first-half double and making his presence felt on and off the ball.

Other goals from Benjamin Šeško, who scored with a long-range walk into the top corner, and Christoph Baumgartner helped Leipzig put memories of a heavy defeat opposite Bayern Munich at the end of 2024. As well as boosting morale, the 4-2 win against Werder also temporarily lifted the Saxony-based side into fourth position in the standings, with Xavi and his teammates definitely radiating accordingly.     

“I am satisfied to return and return with the team,” said Simons, who moved his loan from Paris Saint Germain Permanent. “Of course, scoring two goals, I am satisfied with me. As many as 19 goal involvements in his 32 appearances in his first season in Germany (with eight goals and 11 assists) led to the parties extending the loan arrangement for the current campaign.

At the end of January, a fortnight after its return from a crack, the ink dried into a main blow for the club when Xavi participated in a permanent agreement that operated until June 2027.  

The player defined what the next steps are for him after clarifying his future, saying: “Qualifying for the Champions League for the seventh consecutive season and achieving the DFB Ultimate Cup in Berlin, which are the only things that matter at the moment!”

Leipzig will want their attack master to continue generating the products, after all, as they enter a 20th assembly at Union Berlin just outdoors the first 4 – Stuttgart on the difference in objectives. A DFB Cup quarter-final from Wolfsburg at the end of February will be the next step in potentially claiming this trophy for a third time.
