AJAX, ON, Jan. 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Thanks to federal investment and federal leadership, we’re changing the way cities allow homes to be built on their borders. With increased attention to higher-density housing, student housing, and housing near public transit and affordable housing, we will build more affordable housing for Canadians.
Today, the Government of Canada and the City of Ajax announced an agreement to upgrade the structure of more than 580 housing complexes over the next three years. This work will stimulate the structure of approximately 11,000 housing complexes over the next decade.
The Housing Acceleration Fund (HAF) agreement will provide about $22 million to drive the removal of barriers to structuring the housing we need. Ajax’s action plan commits to helping 8 local projects that will help structure a diversity of other types of houses. and allow for different densities to meet the diverse desires of the community. The investment will help speed up the approval process for new housing, inspire the structure of new rental housing complexes as well as additional sets on existing residential lots, and inspire the creation of more affordable housing. This will include legalizing 4 housing complexes in their own right in the city to inspire the creation of more housing complexes on existing residential lots, expanding housing density around major transit areas, reducing restrictions on parking fees and city structures, and making surpluses public. Land available for housing.
HAF is helping to cut red tape and drive the creation of at least 100,000 new legal housing estates in the first 3 years, which cities and regions say will lead to the creation of more than 450,000 new legal housing estates for Indigenous Peoples citizens and communities across Canada during this period and the next decade. It solicits state-of-the-art action plans from local governments and, once approved, provides upfront investments to ensure timely structuring of new housing, as well as further investments once the effects are achieved. Local governments are encouraged to think big and be ambitious in their approaches, which can come simply with speeding up allocation schedules, enabling higher housing density, and encouraging affordable housing.
The Government of Canada is making life better for Canadians, and housing is key to our work. We will continue to work with provincial, territorial and municipal governments, as well as Indigenous partners, to continue to build more homes for Canadians, faster.
