With a shortened season of 60 games on the books, the MLB playoffs start on Tuesday, and that’s not the format you’re used to.
Partly as an experiment, partly in reaction to the competitive peculiarities of the condensed season, baseball playoffs will be presented more than ever before and will take a position in unprecedented conditions.
Before we begin, here are the answers to some of the big questions that may be being asked.
How many are provided and how does grading work?
The MLB playoffs will consist of 16 groups, 8 in the league.
The 3 most sensitive seeded in the league will be the 3 winners of the department in order of ranking. The next 3 most sensitive sown (our 4-6) will be the 3 groups that finish the moment in your department, in order of classification. The seed groups (our 7-8) will be the groups with the two most productive records among the remaining groups in the league.

In the new Wild Card series, the top ranked will host the entire best-of-three series. For example, No. 1 seed will play and host No. 8. 2 will play and host No. 7, and so on.
So, groups can’t their opponents?
That’s a no.
Although there were reports suggesting that the three most sensitive seeded would be allowed to decide on their Wild Card opponents, MLB would not apply this rule in the end.
Does this persist after 2020?
While MLB is unlikely to have a playoff format of 16 teams, it is equally unlikely that the league will return to the 10-team format that was instituted in 2012. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said the owners had pushed for the league’s expansion. playoffs even before the 2020 season, so anything in the diversity of 12-14 teams is more likely by 2021. He told USA Today that he liked a series of 14 teams in which the most sensible seeded in each league get an absence permit.
What will be more than one postseason?
The addition of the Wild Card series means that MLB will insert 16 to 24 more games into the playoff calendar, which will particularly restrict downtime and latency. Once the Wild Card series opens on September 29, 3 days left with no game leads before. the start of the World Series on October 20.
In particular, there will be no playoff days before the World Series, which could seriously adjust the launch methods used in recent years. More on that later.
Travel will also be limited in October. The Wild Card series will take full position in the ball parks of the house of the top ranked ArrayWinning will move to the postseason bubble. – Mark Townsend
Postseason bubble?
Kind of. It’s not the strict settings used by the NBA and NHL, and MLB doesn’t call them bubbles, it’s unbiased sites. The American League playoffs will take place in Southern California, with Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and ALDS and Petco Park in San Diego, the other ALDS and the entire ALCS.
The National League’s look will take place in Texas, with Minute Maid Park in Houston hosting an NLDS and Globe Life Field in Arlington home to the other NLDS, the NLCS and finally the entire World Series.
So the merit of the house box will be one thing?
Not really. The Wild Card Series, the circular that takes position in the home team pitches, has definitive merit for the top-ranked team, but after that?
Even if LAet San Diego are postseason sites, the Dodgers and Padres might not play there because they’re going to be on the opposite side of the stands. It will certainly be a little weird if the Dodgers play in Texas while the Astros play at Dodger Stadium.
Genuine merit may be that groups don’t have to do so much. A team like the Athletics, for example, can play in California until the World Series. – Mike Oz
What about universal DH and sleeves?
The designated universal batsman will continue in the playoffs, however, the rule that puts a runner at the base of the moment to start later in the normal 2020 season will not apply.
Will there be fans?
Although no official announcement has been made, MLB would approve plans for a limited number of enthusiasts to attend the NLCS and the World Series in Texas. The final resolution will be made through local government officials, who will have to approve MLB protocols.
It should be noted that the Dallas Cowboys were allowed to fill 20% of their huge stadium during Week 1 of the NFL season, which bodes well for MLB, given the proximity of Globe Life Field and AT
How will MLB schedule abbreviated things?
In fact, a desirable situation in the playoffs is that the maximum groups did not face each other, since the season was regional, with groups betting only their department and the corresponding department in the other league, we did not see the maximum productive groups in the West, for example, betting maximum productivity in the East. Some departments are packed with postseason groups (NL and AL Central), so now let’s see if they’re all smart or all mediocre. – Mike Oz
Will we see openings or some strategic peculiarity?
Chances are the Dodgers have used star rookie pitcher Dustin May as openers in recent weeks, supposedly in preparation for a possible postseason tactic. .
Until the World Series, each circular will be played without days off between games, so the extra rest that allows groups to rely more on their most productive pitchers, as did the 2018 Red Sox and especially the 2019 Nationals towards the championships. – Possibly would not exist in 2020, which means that, in general, it will look more like the normal season, the intensity of the paddock will be higher and beginners may have a longer strap to solve problems.
Does this format make the road to a championship harder for favorites like the Los Angeles Dodgers?
Louder. Prolonged parenthesis aggravates them, but makes their mastodon prestige less important. Shorter series leave more room for possibility or luck to fill the gaps of genuine talent.
Before MLB announced the replacement in playoff format, FanGraphs gave the Dodgers, which is the most productive team in MLB with 36 wins, a 19. 5% chance of winning the World Series. 14. 9%. Even after the Dodgers surpassed their schedule and finished with 43 wins, they only raised their name chances to 19. 5%.
In undeniable terms, there are more groups with a little success in a Cinderella career and it is imaginable that this is at the expense of a giant Zach Crizer.
