For much of the history of school football, it is possible for groups to play evenly. Luckily for the record books and to give players and enthusiasts an extra point of drama, we’ve now implemented overtime regulations for a winner.
The 1995-96 bowl season saw the arrival of regulations in playoff games, with the first game being the 1995 Las Vegas Bowl. Toledo scored a box goal on the first possession and earned a 40-37 victory over Nevada.
Overtime was then added to regular season games beginning the fall of 1996.

HISTORY: Longest overtime games in FBS college football history
The College Football Playoff National Championship Game has seen one overtime game in 2018 when Alabama defeated Georgia 26-23. Georgia was also involved in the only CFP Semifinal game to go to overtime when one game earlier they took down Oklahoma in a 54-48 thriller in the Rose Bowl. It was the first Rose Bowl game in history to go to overtime.
Most recently, Texas and Arizona State played in the first game of the 2025 CFP quarterfinals, where the Longhorns fended off the Sun Devils 39-31 for the double Peach Bowl victory.
