An in-form Atletico Madrid will have to overcome a one-goal deficit and erratic form of their own on Wednesday if they are to thwart elusive rivals Inter Milan and triumph in this season’s Champions League quarterfinals. The Red & Whites lost the opening game at San Siro after Marko Arnautovic passed to devastate Diego Simeone’s appearance as they closed in on what could have been an admirable draw in Milan. The Nerazzurri are the in-form team in Europe lately and have won their last 15 games in a row. Atletico have controlled just two wins in their last nine games and are under enormous pressure to triumph elsewhere if the Champions League dream is to become a reality.

The 2-0 defeat to Cadiz in La Liga at the weekend was the latest in a long run of disappointments for Atletico this season, having failed to win any of their last six away games.
The news is that Atletico have only lost once at home since January 2023, including a comeback of 28 wins from 31 games at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium.
And Simeone’s side will still be without a pick-me-up to win against Serie A leaders Simone Inzaghi if they are to advance through Europe’s most sensible competition, hoping to triumph in the last 16 for the first time since 2022.
Yann Bisseck’s solitary arrival led Inter to a valuable win in Bologna on Saturday, securing the Nerazzurri a 16-point lead in what looks like an almost guaranteed Scudetto title.
That comfort at home will give Inzaghi some peace of mind and he will be able to devote some resources to the Champions League bid, with a draw enough to improve on Wednesday.
Arnautovic scored the winning goal against Atletico in February but it seems unlikely he will be able to return due to injury, while Brazilian Carlos Augusto is also a doubt for the guests.
Atletico are more involved with the news that Antoine Griezmann will likely be sidelined with an ankle injury, with Thomas Lamar, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Paulo also injured.
