New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick gave an attractive answer when asked about the team that could be a platoon of quarterbacks that included Brian Hoyer, Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham.
Belichick, as you may have heard, did not reject the idea. Turns out I’d think about it as long as it was “the most productive thing for the team.”
That raises the question, how would the quarterbacks think about the idea? Veteran Hoyer, whose greatest credit is his delight in the Patriots offense, explained his state of mind when asked about the option Thursday.
“Yes, I think, look, as Coach Belichick says he’s going to do whatever’s most productive for the team and I have a lot of confidence in him and his training team,” Hoyer said at a video convention with reporters.
Hoyer explained how he had to adjust to the quarterback team before his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns.
“It’s something I played a little bit in Cleveland (in 2014) with Johnny Manziel, so it’s not something I haven’t dealt with before. And it’s about, look, as you see in practice, we’re rotating consistently for the quarterback to prepare you to enter, observe the stage and run the game as productively as possible in this scenario. I think it’s anything that’s out of my control. I don’t care about that until the coach tells me, though, it’s something I’ve reveled in.
“And look, for me, I realize that I can only do what I can. Array then, if I play in a game and am retired in the moment, check out and put back on the third, I just have to run in that situation, no matter what happened before that.”
Hoyer was 7-6 in thirteen starts that season with the Browns, betting a total of 14 games. He threw for 3,300 yards with 12 touchdowns and thirteen interceptions. Manziel made the impression in five games (two openings) throwing only 35 passes with nine attempts to the ground.
It’ll be nice to see how it’s going in New England.
