The crocodile is the largest trapped in years, said a ranger.

The 770-pounder male caught on the Flora River in a remote nature park 120 km southwest of Katherine’s inner city said Katherine’s main ranger, John Burke.

A 15.5-foot crocodile trapped three years ago in the same wildlife control area, but caught on the Katherine River, which is closer to the sea, Burke.

He said he didn’t know a bigger crocodile caught on the Flora River.

Crocodile numbers have increased in Australia’s tropical north since federal law made it a species in the early 1970s.

“They are expanding (in number), and that’s a component of explaining why we have control spaces, to decrease the number in high-traffic spaces so that there’s less chance of interaction between salts and people,” Burke said, referring to saltwater crocodiles.
