I rejected Real Madrid, it wasn’t the right level – Nagelsmann

Then, at Hoffenheim, Nagelsmann on a short list of candidates to upgrade Zinedine Zidane at the Santiago Bernabéu in 2018, but Julen Lopetegui was eventually appointed to the position.

Lopetegui’s tenure ended in October of the same year, while Santiago Solari also had a brief step forward before Zidane returned in March 2019.

Nagelsmann, for his part, has opted to sign for RB Leipzig, taking the helm in 2019 and guiding the team to a third position in the Bundesliga. The 33-year-old showed that he did not have to sign for Madrid because he thought he was not yet in a position to take on a task of this magnitude.

“We had phone calls, but in the end it was all for me,” Nagelsmann told Marca, a quarter-final striker in the Leipzig Champions League with Atletico Madrid.

‘I don’t think it’s the right step to move to Real Madrid yet. I’m one of the applicants and the list is not very long.

“For me, it was very important. I had a smart verbal exchange with [Madrid general manager] José Angel Sánchez and it was still not the right step.

“We agreed that we could communicate in the long run if Real Madrid needed a coach and if I was available.”

Nagelsmann added that Leipzig has the ideal platform to expand as a coach.

“I looked for the next step to make sense. I’m looking to plan a football career, even if it’s difficult,” he said.

“I’m a young guy, I don’t have to go straight to the maximum sensitive shelf either. I give myself time to develop. Leipzig took a great effort to point me out. That’s the ultimate thing.

“Relatively fast, I had an offer on the table. We had smart conversations and saw it was a smart next step. A bigger club, with a bigger budget than Hoffenheim, which would allow me to keep growing.”

“I was also given the hands-free to provide my concepts. I don’t have to justify what I do all the time, but I have the opportunity to evolve and move my concepts into the field.”

“It’s a smart step in my career to prepare for the future, perhaps.
