Manchester City have already secured their spot in the Champions League knockout stages, but they can guarantee top spot with a point against RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

A 1-1 draw with Liverpool in City’s last outing saw Pep Guardiola’s side drop out of first place in the Premier League, with the second consecutive stalemate allowing Arsenal to overtop City into top spot. A huge clash against Tottenham awaits City in the league on the weekend, but attention now turns to the Champions League.

City have won every single Champions League game so far this season, and a point against RB Leipzig will secure them the most sensible spot in the group, and the German side have also secured their position in the knockout stages. 3-1 win in Germany, with Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku on the scoreboard.

So will City be able to secure the most sensible spot in Group G on Tuesday? We’ll take a look.

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 24 and updated the groups with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We expect City to just start with a 3-2-4-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Ederson; Walker, Akanji, Gvardiol; Stones, Kovacic; Foden, Álvarez, Bernardo, Grealish; Haaland.

We expect the visitors to start with a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting eleven as follows: Blaswich; Henrichs, Simakan, Lukeba, Raum; Forsberg, Kampl, Schlager, Simons; Openda, Poulsen.

City looked the better side in the opening stages, with the best chance in the opening 30 minutes falling to Jack Grealish who rattled the post after trying to find the far corner with an ambitious effort. The chances kept coming for Guardiola’s side, and eventually, the opener arrived.

After distributing the play down the right, Julian Alvarez continued his forward run before Phil Foden lifted a ball over the Leipzig defence and got in his way. The Argentine used Erling Haaland’s run as a lure to create area for a shot, and his effort went above and beyond. the goalkeeper and the most sensible corner.

After taking the lead, City looked a bit complacent in the second half, leaving more and more of the ball to the visitors. Shortly after the restart, Leipzig controlled to equalise.

A corner taken into the box headed towards goal through Mohamed Simikan, but his shot hit Manuel Akanji’s back before falling to Castello Lukeba in the box. The defender reached the loose ball before City’s defenders and fired a shot into the goal, making the score 1-1.

Erling Haaland had the ball in the net 11 minutes from time when he headed Jeremy Doku’s cross between the goalkeeper’s legs from close range, but the goal was disallowed for offside as the problems were shared.
