Dusseldorf, Germany – Inter Milan is back in the top European competition for the first time in a decade, and the Italian team plays as if he had never been absent.
Lautaro Martínez and Romelu Lukaku scored two goals in the completion of Inter’s stands on Monday, defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 in the Europa League semi-finals.
Inter beat Shakhtar in what was, in the first place, a tight and defensive game before scoring 4 goals in the last hour. The Italian club will face five-time winner Sevilla in the final in Cologne on Friday.
“We achieved the latter by beating a very strong team, don’t be fooled by the result,” said Inter coach Antonio Conte. “We were smart not to let them play the way they were looking.”
Since his arrival last year, Conte imposed the field on what had been a divided Inter and rebuilt it around Lukaku, who scored 33 goals in his first season with the club.
Martinez’s headers in the 19th minute and Danilo D’Ambrosio in ’64 allowed Inter to play his first primary continental trophy since winning the Champions League in 2010 with Jose Mourinho. Martinez and Lukaku added 3 more goals in 10 minutes to secure the result.
Shakhtar also seeks to emulate beyond European glories after winning the UEFA Cup in 2009. The only player left on this team, goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov, guilty of the first goal.
Pyatov cut a pass to Inter Nicolo midfielder Barella, who sped up the right wing and sent a centre that eluded Lukaku but left his wife Martinez with a single header at the time of the first goal.
Inter tightened his grip when D’Ambrosio headed to the post of the moment behind a corner by Josip Brozovic. It occurred less than two minutes after the most productive possibility of the Shakhtar match, led by the close diversity through Junior Moraes over Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
Inter suppressed the same old style of Shakhtar passes, relentlessly pushing the defensive line of the Ukrainian champions to save them from the next passing moves.
“They absolutely closed the start of our attacks,” coach Luis Castro said through a translator.

The Belgian has scored in the Europa League’s five Inter Games this season, and in a record 10 consecutive Europa League games, five for Everton in 2014-15.
Inter won the UEFA Cup, as the Europa League was then called, in 1991, 1994 and 1998. Conte’s appearance was a career-high with six consecutive victories, having conceded only once in his last seven games, in a 2–1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the quarter-finals.
