20-year-old footballer Jamain Stephens from the University of California, Pennsylvania, died, he said Tuesday.
Stephens, a senior defensive lineman, son of former Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengal offensive lineman Jamain Stephens.
A Facebook post from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, where Stephens played, said the cause of his death was related to COVID-19-related headaches.
The school aired on a Wednesday saying it was eliminating the cause of death from the Facebook post.
“When we heard the news of Jamain Stephens’ death, we were devastated as a community,” said Brother Tony Baginski, FSC, Director of Central Catholic. “He really enjoyed an effort to make his death known at the right time. “We mistakenly attributed his death without official confirmation of the cause of death. We had received information about his death from close friends of Jamain, who shared the news with us. We apologize for this error, and this data has been deleted. of our Facebook ad on 8/09/2020. At this time, we do not have an official confirmation of the cause of his death. “
Stephens played 32 games for the University of California in his first 3 seasons. The school will not bet soccer this fall with physical fitness considerations similar to COVID-19, forcing the game to be suspended through the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
“Jamain was a wonderful student with a smile on his face every time I saw him,” said the athletic director of the University of California, Pennsylvania, Dr. Karen Hjerpe, when pronouncing his death. “His personality was contagious and it had such a positive effect on each and every one of those he met. “
