NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Chelsea will finish this season in the top six of the Premier League, believes Jamie Carragher, who believes they have made big mistakes in recent months.
It has been a summer of massive adjustments at Stamford Bridge, with a host of new signings and a manager replacement as Enzo Maresca replaced Mauricio Pochettino on the bench.
There have been departures, but many more are needed: Maresca faces a plethoric and unreachable team.
Carragher believes that the green of Maresca has too complicated a task and that the club was wrong to retain Pochettino, who finished strongly last season.
The Liverpool legend is also not particularly enthusiastic about the deals he has made in the transfer market, believing he is still short of an elite goalkeeper and centre-forward, despite all the signings he has made.
Asked if he thought Chelsea would be better than last season, Carragher replied on Sky Sports: “No, I don’t think so, I think they made a big mistake by getting rid of coach Pochettino, we know he’s a very sensible, great coach. “. ” experience.
“Maresca is a young, green coach and I think starting him here now is a difficult job, so I don’t see them completing in the top six.
“Listen, they will fight for the European places. I, Newcastle, will also be there with Aston Villa. Only Aston Villa will have it.
“They [Chelsea] don’t have a goalkeeper or centre-forward!
Carragher expects Manchester City to win the title, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham rounding out the top four, ahead of Manchester United and Aston Villa in fifth and sixth.
By contrast, Gary Neville gave Chelsea fourth place ahead of Liverpool, something Carragher found hard to believe.
“Did you stop by Chelsea?” Carragher asked. We were calling Chelsea desperate at the start of the series and you put him in Liverpool’s top 4 most sensible forwards?
The former Manchester United defender backs Chelsea’s brilliance, but believes Liverpool are going through a difficult time as Arne Slot has a very difficult task ahead of him to replace Jurgen Klopp.
“I think in Liverpool the Klopp effect will take its toll, just moving away from the evidence of history,” Neville said. “If a coach like that leaves, I think there will be pain at some point this season and I think it will charge them. “
Neville’s prediction for the season sees Arsenal take the spot ahead of City, United and Chelsea in the top four, Liverpool fifth and Spurs sixth.
